Description

The genus consists of about 25 species; they are all native to Central or South America. This is an upright plant either grown indoors or as a hanging baskets. They are tropical herbaceous plants that will die back to small tubers in autumn and winter, or in the tropical dry season. The leaves are hairy and in opposite pairs. The flowers are brightly coloured, with stems which are soft and brittle. They are frost tender, min 10C, and will prefer bright light but not direct sun, and well drained soil. You can propagate by division of rhizomes or by seed, if available in the spring or by stem cuttings in the summer.
