A vigorous upright deciduous shrub from Chile and Argentina. Grows to about 3.5m tall. Bears lance-shaped to ovate leaves usually held in whorls of three. Is free flowering; the tubular red flowers have purple petals and are produced over a long period in summer; black purple fruit follow. The leaves of Fuchsia magellanica var. gracilis are mostly held in twos. ‘Thompsonii’ has scarlet tubes and sepals and pale purplish petals, although the flowers are smaller than type, they are more profuse. ‘Versicolor’ (syn. ‘Tricolor’) has grey-green leaves flushed red when immature and irregularly white-splotched margins when mature; the flowers are small and deep red.
