Euphorbia is a very varied genus of about 2,000 species of annuals, biennials, herbaceous perennials, shrubs, trees and succulents with an equally varied distribution in temperate, subtropical and tropical regions. They are adapted to a wide range of habitats, which has led to a great deal of variation in both size and growth habit.
The flower heads will consist of cup-shaped bracts, in various colours, they will usually each containing several flowers lacking typical sepals and petals. They are fully hardy to frost tender, min 5-15C, and will grow well in sun or partial shade with moist but well drained soil. You can propagate by basal cuttings in the spring or summer, by division in spring or early autumn or by seeds in the autumn. The milky sap may irritate the skin.
The common name "spurge" derives from the Middle English/Old French espurge ("to purge"), due to the use of the plants sap as a purgative
