Description

A perennial herb from Britain and Northern Europe. Bears spear-shaped or hastate, whorled toothed leaves. Spikes of pinkish purple, cross-shaped in mid summer. This plant is often found in the wild in Northern Europe. STEM: Upright, 4 raised lines. ROOT: Creeping, rooting stems at or below ground-level. HAIRS: Absent below, sparse above, pressed to surface. STIPULES: Absent LEAF-STALK: Absent BRACTS: Present, lowest leaf-like. FLOWER STALK: Shorter than flower. SEPALS: 4, spear-shaped, bases joined into tube. PETALS: 4, deeply notched. STAMENS: 8 STIGMA: 1, on short style. OVARY: 1, 4-celled. SEEDS: Many, rough, with long plume of hairs.
