Description

This is a large genus which will include about 250 species of showy herbaceous plants. They are mostly perennials but a few are annual or biennial. The leaves will vary in shape and size, sometimes arising mainly from upright stems or sometimes only in basal clusters. The spring and summer flowers are mostly bell-shaped but in some species they are more tubular, urn-shaped or star-shaped, and will come mainly in shades of blue and purple with some that are pinks or white. They are fully to half hardy and are grown in the sun or shade. Most of the species will prefer moist but well drained soil. You can propagate by softwood or basal cuttings in the summer or by seeds or division in the autumn or spring. They are very prone to slug attack and rust may be a problem in the autumn.
