Description

This large genus contains mostly summer-flowering, tuberous perennials from South America that bear showy and profuse, multi-coloured flowers from spring to summer. They are upright and have wiry stems which bear scattered thin twisted leaves which are found mainly on the upper half. The flowers are produced in umbels of outward-facing flowers they make good cut flowers. Frost hardy, but in very cold winters protect by covering dormant tubers with dry bracken or loose peat. Needs well drained soil with a sunny, sheltered site. Propagate by seed or division in early spring.
