April Gardening Tips

Camellia japonica `Twilight`April, this is where the gardeners year really starts in earnest, there is plenty to do ... and hopefully plenty of early colour to cheer you along.  The Camellia and Magnollias will be in full bloom as will the cherries.  and if you want inspiration, then here are just some of the plants flowering at the RHS gardens at Wisley right now http://www.thegardenwall.co.uk/image/tid/92

  • Flower Garden
    •  Weed those borders early.  Pick a warm day and get out into the borders and take out the weeds before they really start to take hold ... you will be saving yourself work in the long run.
    • It is often said that a weed is just a seed growing in the wrong place.  Is in borders that are quite ordered, watch out for self-sown seedlings when you are weeding and remove them too.  It you like your border more chaotic ... let them be!
    • It is too late to plant bare-rooted trees and shrubs, but many suppliers now sell container grown versions of the same species.
    • Dead-head spent daffodils.  Snap the flower head off just behind the bulbous part, this will allow the plant to focus on storing energy in the bulb.
    • April is the month for planting summer flowering bulbs like dahlias, gladiolas and lilies. Mix bulb fertiliser, processed manure and peat moss into the planting soil.
  • Vegetable Garden
    • April is a great time to select and plant fruit trees and berry plants. Fruits and berries do best when planted in full sun
    • Plant perennial vegetables like asparagus, rhubarb, horseradish, etc. It's also time to plant peas, carrots, beets, spinach, cauliflower, cabbage, etc. Root crops like potatoes, radishes, parsnips and onions can be planted at anytime.
  • Wildlife Garden
    • Use peat - free composts.
  • Water Gardener
    • The water is going to be cold!  But it is a great time to clear out or thin out established plants in the pond.  Clearly this doesn't have to be done every year.
    • As the water starts to warm in the pond, it is an ideal time to introduce new aquatic plants.  If you have Koi in the pond, be sure to put a deep layer of gravel (or even better flat stones) over the top of the compost.  This should stop the Koi rooting through the compost and destroying the plant.
    • If you are introducing new plants, make sure they are indigenous species.
    • If you are planning on introducing new fish, this is the best time of year to do so.
  •  General Tasks
    • As the weather starts to warm, so the garden pests start to multiply.  Get on top of any problems early.  Protect young plants from the ravaging of slugs and snails.  Check young shoots for signs of disease or attack.
    • Keep the mower blades quite high, but start to mow the lawn regularly.  If it is a dry, bright day give the mower a quick walk.  Do not allow the lawn to get over-long.
    • Now is the time to start feeding your lawn and dealing with any moss problems.  Whilst moss-killing treatments will work, unless you do some hard work the moss will be back!  Use a fork to aerate the lawn (or a machine if you have access to one) and use a scarifier break up the thatch.
    • April and May are ideal for pruning evergreens. So if you have a Juniper, Cypress or conifer that need shearing or pruning this is a good time to accomplish this task.
