January Gardening Tips

SnowdropIt may not always be the most inviting time to go out and work in the garden, but there is still plenty to keep the keen, or foolhardy busy.

When the plants are at their quietest is often the best time to do other chores around the garden: mending fencelines; treating woodwork; straightening borders ... there really is no time to sit down!

And at some point you will see you first snowdrop, and the promise of spring.

  • Flower Garden
    • Prune climbing and shrub roses
  • Vegetable Garden
  • Wildlife Garden
    • Feed the birds, keep you peanut and seed feeders topped up
  • Water Gardener
    • Make sure you have a football floating in your pond, it will keep the fish happy if the pond freezes.
  • General Tasks
    • Treat Woodwork such as trellis and fences
    • Give your patio and paths a good scrub with a mild bleach, it will prevent them becoming too slippery.
