This genus contains over 1200 species of trees and shrubs, which will range from low-growing to tall uprights. Over 700 are native to Australia, they are also common in tropical and subtropical Africa (most African species have vicious spines and are referred to as ‘thorn trees’). Acacias have either bipinnate leaves or have flattened leaf stalks. The small, fragrant flowers range from deep yellow to white and are crowded into globular heads or cylindrical spikes. The fruit are either round or flattened pods. Acacias generally are legumes and therefore they can fix nitrogen into the soil. Frost hardy to frost tender, min 5-7C. Requires full sun and well drained soil. Propagate by seed in spring. Red spider mite and mealy bug may be problematic.
